Summarizing Derek Glaser's Visit

It is not easy to summarize something, so make a list, or free write about the experience.

Write a paragraph about his visit, it can be factual information about the sculpture or about the visit.

Krissy- As a part of our service learning project we are looking at the public art in our town. One of the public works of art we looking at is a sculpture of a cyclone called "Our Cynosure". It is a cyclone that is outside of Winthrop High School with benches all around as a gathering place. On the cyclone there are 37 symbols inscribed on it. The symbols that are inscribed on it reflect our school and your learning career.

He is a artist that has always had an interest in metal and in this piece I think that he really shows that in the work.
Derek Glazer just clicked with blacksmithing. - Zach

Derek Glazer came to the Winthrop Middle School the other day and told Mrs. Gillman's 1st quarter art class about the Cynosure(a.k.a the big twister looking thing in front of the high school). All of the information he gave us on the cynosure was very surprising. Like I bet almost every citizen of Winthrop didn't know that the name of the sculpture is "Our Cynosure". He built the sculpture all on his own and he did a lot for it. He had to bend the metal himself, he had to in grave the smallest details, he paid for the entire cost of building the sculpture, and after doing all of that he had to move the sculpture to the high school himself! Can you imagine what it would have been like to move something more than a thousand pounds without any help!? Well Derek Glazer did it. I'm deeply impressed that Derek Glazer would do all of that for his art that he was donating to a school. That indicates to me that he has a deep passion for his art.

The information he shared was astoundingly insightful and I hope that who ever reads this takes the time to read the information that we post on this blog. If you have any questions or comments please email us at this blog-cogs101

Alyssa-

I go by this sculpture everyday going to school. I would always look at it when we went by and I thought it was so cool. To tell you the truth I still look at it everyday. I had never gone up to it and looked at real closely. There is actually symbols on it. I never knew that until a few weeks ago when we took pictures of it. It was interesting how he built that. The story of it. When he was hired to make the project he went up to the sight and it looked like a cyclone went through the land. There was an apple orchard where the school is now. When Mr. Glaser went to the sight it looked like a cyclone was there. All of the trees were pushed back to the edge of the woods. That is why it is a cyclone

Why a cyclone?
When he was hired to make the project he went up to the sight and it looked like a cyclone went through the spot. When they built the school, they built in on an old apple orchard. The district brought in a bulldozer to knock over the trees and shove them to the edge of the woods. It looked like a tornado or cyclone drove its way through the soon to be school grounds.
What is Cynosure?
Cynosure is the center of attention or a gathering place. Mr. Glaser wanted the school to use the sculpture as a meeting or waiting place for after sports or waiting for parents after school.

In our first quarter art class we have been looking at the Cynosure (cyclone NOT tornado) outside the Winthrop High School. We had Derek Glazer (the guy whom made it) come into the school to tell us about it. The cyclone has 37 very intricate symbols from students and teachers ideas on it from sports to education. It is a focal point which is why he named it Cynosure. The Cynosure took him a year and a half to complete and cost about 25,000 dollars. It is a very amazing all the detail he put into the metal. I really hope you get the chance to read all of our comments and stuff about the Cynosure and maybe get to see it yourself.

We are doing a services learning project about public art in winthrop. Derek Glazer come to class last week and answered our questions about "Our Cynosure". when asked about people contacting him about it, he answered "No, you are the first. I think people just got used to it being there." The project was funded by the percent for art. The percent for art is a government funded program that essentially make one percent of the money used go to art. The SCULPTURE stands 12 feet tall and can be seen from aprox. 200 feet away !~kelsie

allie-
Derek Glazer came into our class to talk about "Our Cynosure" his project he made out front of the winthrop high school. It is a cyclone he made this because when he drove up to the site where he was going to make a sculpture he saw what looked like a cyclone went through the area where he was working. He wanted the sculpture to show growth which happens mostly in high school. He wanted this to be different than the every day mascot out front of most high schools.

Rachel- Derek Glaser designed and made the $25,000 cyclone sculpture outside of the high school called Our Cynosure. It took him about over a year to finish it. It has 37 symbols on it. The sculpture was finished in 2005.

Taylor ~ Winthrop resident and artist Derek Glazier came to our school and talked of his inspiration of the one of a kind metal design. He showed us his steps and time frame in making his metal tornado. We all became more informed of what we once called "the tornado" because we all saw it as a tornado coming from a book when it was really so much more. Spinning from the book of knowledge "Our Cynosure" expresses of how we progress in learning things from our abc's to graduating from high school. He gave us info on the cost, how he put it together, and how he did it all by himself and put it in front of the Winthrop High School as a place for students to sit and ponder.
